McDowell Grove Forest Preserve in Naperville is comprised of mature woodlands, open fields, a lake, pond and abundant wildlife with the DuPage River running through it. But this beautiful 515-acre site has a storied history. Learn the secrets hidden within McDowell Grove from Chris Gingrich, education outreach specialist for the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, during a special presentation, “Rediscovering Camp McDowell,” to be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 20 at Naper Settlement’s Pre-Emption House. Guided walking tour of Joseph Naper’s original 19 blocks of Naperville with an emphasis on downtown Naperville living and the German immigrant experience. Highlights of the tour include the site of Naper Academy, Hannah Ditzler’s home, the site of Stenger Brewery, and where Ed Stoos made his once famous Naperville soda water. All ages welcome.
